In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated. Charles became the new heir, and he was crowned emperor in 1916.

Charles inherited a crumbling empire that was on the brink of collapse. He faced enormous challenges, including the First World War, food shortages, and political unrest.

Despite the difficulties, Charles remained committed to his faith and to his people. He worked tirelessly to promote peace and reconciliation. He also introduced a number of social reforms, including universal suffrage and an eight-hour workday.

In 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed, and Charles was forced to abdicate. He and his family went into exile in Switzerland.

In exile, Charles continued to live a life of service. He dedicated himself to helping the poor and the sick. He also wrote several books on spirituality and social justice.

Charles died in 1922 at the age of 34. His holiness and his unwavering commitment to God and to his people have inspired countless lives.

In 2004, Charles was beatified by Pope John Paul II. He is now known as Blessed Charles of Austria, and his feast day is celebrated on October 21.
